What are some major accomplishments you have had since your Sweet publication?

In the past few months, I was nominated for Best of the Net by Witness for my poem “Nine of Pentacles,” and for a Pushcart Prize by The Indianapolis Review for my poem “In the Rothko Chapel.”

Can you tell us about a current/ongoing project that you’re excited about?

I’m currently in the throes of NaNoWriMo, aka National Novel Writing Month. Word counts and narrative are a stretch for me, but I’m having a lot of fun! I’m working on a coming-of-age novel set in the 1990s.

Who is your favorite author?

Virginia Woolf

What is your favorite poem/essay/book?

This is a hard question! Today I’m going to go with The Tradition by Jericho Brown, but know that I have many favorites.

What inspires you to write?

Writing is how I make sense of the world. Usually I’m motivated to write by a conflict or pattern, either within or outside myself.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton – what a wild ride. Next up, I’m really looking forward to poet Tracy K. Smith’s To Free the Captives.

What is your favorite sweet? We would love for you to share a recipe or link to place that serves it. Pictures are great, too!

I love the morning buns at Creme, a French bakery near me. I also need to shout out my wife’s stellar cheesecake, but the recipe is a secret. 🙂

Doesn’t that place just look adorable!

Thank you, Elizabeth, for taking the time to reconnect with us. We look forward to seeing more of your work in the future!
