Not even the wind creates love songs equally,
For a passerby, lifting a stubborn edge of joy
From this ruddy earth with frail hands,
gathering a whole heart in secret labour —
Hearing the great call across fallow fields.
The aspens empty of gold, mothering the driftwood
— language we will soon disagree on.
For now, we’re distracted, painting landscapes,
clothless. River rushes aglow, stroking the violet sky.
Point to it all in secret memoir — the infidel’s soundtrack.
From city to cliff, sparrows as quavers — dying on a dark score.
Wet highwires humming a sad anthem of addiction.
Its vibrato matching the thunder we keep running towards.
Point to it all — and learn to love whatever the lightning strikes.
