What are some major accomplishments you have had since your Sweet publication?
This was my first CNF publication and I’m honored to have in in Sweet. So far this year I’ve published half a dozen poems in other journals. Most recently, I had three poems accepted for a special issue on ancestral inheritance for the British magazine, Mutter.
Who is your favorite author?
Louise Glück
What is your favorite poem/essay/book?
I return, again and again, to Glück’s poem “Purple Bathing Suit,” found in one of her earlier collections, Meadowlands.
What inspires you to write?
A need to ground myself in something bigger than myself.
What are you reading right now?
Stories and testimonies of people who lived through the late 1940s in Czechoslovakia.
What is your favorite sweet? We would love for you to share a recipe or link to place that serves it. Pictures are great, too!
It depends what country I am in! In Sweden I love a warm cardamon bun (Pascals on Södermalm makes the best). In Czechia I like poppyseed cake (makovník) fresh from my own oven. At home in Santa Barbara, I would choose a croissant to go from Renaud’s and eat it at Thousand Steps beach. In lieu of a picture, I am sharing a poem about one of my other favorite Czech sweets- bábovka (similar to American marble cake).

The cake is sweet and dry
the outside, creating a crust
and when you place it
in your mouth, it’s quickly moist
This body should be haggard
from the night, but
it only feels sleepy, as if
those were the most innocent of touches
When I came home, I dreamed
I had never left, and we kissed
while we slept and you stirred beside me
Until I realized that was Lydia,
and you and I had already said goodbye
