Julie lives in Victoria, BC when she’s not visiting her daughter in Montreal QC; mostly you can find her smelling the flowers or playing tennis when she is not writing or messing around with paint. Find out more about Julie on her website.

What are some major accomplishments you have had since your Sweet publication?

I’ve recently published my fifth book, called Whiny Baby. It’s my second poetry collection with McGill-Queen’s University Press, and it came out in April 2024. I’ve also been playing with watercolors and other art materials, in part for my own creativity and in part as research for my novel-in-progress, and achieved two years of daily art practice in 2022/2023!

Can you tell us about a current/ongoing project that you’re excited about?

I’ve recently begun writing short fiction again, after a few years focusing on poetry and novel, so that feels really good. I love this form so much, and it feels like home, coming back to it.

Who is your favorite author?

Alice Munro

What is your favorite poem/essay/book?

Impossible to choose, but today it’s the poem “Any Common Desolation” by Ellen Bass, from her collection Indigo.

What inspires you to write?

Walking in nature or cities, eavesdropping in cafes, reading, sudden flashes of memory, an inner imperative to get things down on paper (I mostly write first drafts in notebooks, by hand).

What are you reading right now?

Stolen Focus by Johann Hari, What About the Baby by Alice McDermott, Last Woman by Carleigh Baker.

What is your favorite sweet?

Raspberry Buttermilk Cake

We LOVE Smitten Kitchen! And that looks absolutely fabulous!

Thank you, Julie, for taking the time to reconnect with us again! We look forward to seeing more of your work in the future!
