What are some major accomplishments you have had since your Sweet publication?
In 2021 I won an Oregon Literary Fellowship, which gave me the encouragement (and money) to pursue a chapbook project and submit to journals/publishers I might not have tried otherwise. In early 2022 the chapbook manuscript, Astronauts—about my late sister, addiction, and our complicated relationship—won the Chad Walsh Chapbook Prize from Beloit Poetry Journal; it was published in June 2022. Working with the Beloit editors was an amazing experience!
Can you tell us about a current/ongoing project that you’re excited about?
Right now I’m gearing up for the annual August Poetry Postcard Fest—getting ready to write 30 poems during August, and I’m painting all of my postcards this year as well (getting a head start on the painting during July!). Also working on my next full-length poetry manuscript.
Who is your favorite author?
Michael Lewis (Moneyball, The Big Short). My favorite book of his is The Undoing Project, about the science of why people make incorrect assumptions and wrong decisions. It literally changed the way I think.
What is your favorite poem/essay/book?
My favorite poem right now is “Thanksgiving” by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.
What inspires you to write?
I’m always interested in situations/memories/scenes that have at least two emotions at odds with each other; that complexity of emotion always feels like fertile ground for writing. I’m also intrigued by the fact that each of us has a unique way of telling a story; no two ways are exactly alike. That gives me comfort and encouragement in a writing world that can seem lonely and thankless at times.
What are you reading right now?
Death Comes to Pemberly by P. D. James. Totally comfort fiction, I confess. (Stressful month at the day job.)
