Lift

I’m losing my edge—the doctor

says my spine is disappearing

from the inside

out. I’m not surprised. Lately

I feel less and

less between my

rib and the kingfisher

at the end of the dock.

Fierce. Light. Of small

substance. I’m on my way

to hollow—then flight.

Meredith Davies Hadaway is the author of three poetry collections: Fishing Secrets of the Dead, The River is a Reason, and At The Narrows (winner of the 2015 Delmarva Book Prize for Creative Writing). She holds an MFA in Poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts and was, for ten years, poetry editor for The Summerset Review. Though she is gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free, she manages to sneak in an occasional square of dark chocolate. Hear more from her in an interview with The Spy: https://youtu.be/yC1Xn8AtimY.
