A Generative Workshop with Laurie Uttich
Thursday, April 13, 7-9pm Eastern time
In this generative workshop, we will read flash essays, discuss the role of reflection, and write
from a series of prompts. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the genre and a notebook
full of ideas and rough drafts.
Laurie’s teaching philosophy and approach: When we wade through memory--or moment--
and invite a reader to sit in this shared space, the distance between us shrinks. Together, we reach
for something larger than ourselves. I'm in it for that magic, that sense of wonder we feel when
we realize we're not alone. As a teacher, I think of myself as a witness first. I strive to see what
the writer is putting before me, what lies beneath the surface, and what's waiting to be
discovered. Often, the reader can sense what the writer hasn't yet completely revealed. My job is
to ask the questions that lead to a larger sense of discovery, to nudge the writer to go deeper, to
ask if the words on the page best communicate what lies within, and to accompany the artist on
this journey.
